Prototypes for Clanky the Robots Comic Strip by Matt H. Murphy 1972
Here we have a collection of original handmade prototypes for the idea of
a comic strip and/or cartoon featuring a family of robots known as "Clanky".
Clanky was the brainchild of the artist Matt H. Murphy of Bronxville, NY, who
worked as an artist for Disney Studios during the 1960's and '70's. These items
were purchased from his estate sale approx. 10 years ago. The items made
for marketing purposes include an alarm clock, a "Clanky for President"
paperback book, a handmade wooden robot toy, a "Clanky Crazy Ikes" robot toy
with interchangeable parts (the original robot's head is substituted with a
wooden Clanky head), a coffee can robot face with a light-up nose, drawings for
Clanky the Robots pins, a Clanky light switch cover, a Clanky nose light
nightlight and a version of the game "operation", with Clanky on the operating
table. As far as the paperback and the operation game, Matt H. Murphy has
placed his own version of the book and game on paper, and placed this over the
originals (the book Matt's cover is on is "The Bedside Mad" 1959). Most of
the items are marked, "Picture Craft Corporation", with a date of 1972. I do
not know if this corporation was ever put into existence or was simply 'on the
drawing board'. A rare opportunity to obtain a truly unique collection of one
man's vision for his pop culture enterprise !
